What to do if you encounter a snake, jellyfish, or centipede — and how SGS-trained staff are prepared to respond.

Common Venomous Animals

King cobras and pit vipers are found in jungle areas bordering resorts and residential estates, particularly during the rainy season. Sea snakes and lionfish are common in Phuket waters and should be treated as dangerous — do not attempt to handle them even if they appear docile.

Centipedes and scorpions hide in dark, damp spaces: under furniture, inside shoes, in towels left on the floor. Always check before reaching into confined spaces, especially in bungalows or beachside accommodation with outdoor access.

What To Do If Bitten or Stung

Stay calm and keep the affected limb below heart level. Do not cut the wound, apply a tourniquet, or attempt to suck out venom — these actions spread the toxin faster. Remove jewellery from the affected area in case of swelling.

Call emergency services immediately at 1669 (EMS) or ask hotel security staff for assistance. Try to note the colour, size, and shape of the animal — do not attempt to catch or photograph it. Time is critical with venomous snake bites.

Safety Tips

  • Shake out shoes and clothing before wearing — especially if left on the floor overnight
  • Do not reach into dark spaces (rockeries, pool skimmer boxes, under poolside furniture) without checking first
  • Keep emergency numbers saved: 1669 (EMS), 191 (Police), 1155 (Tourist Police)
  • Inform hotel security staff immediately if you spot a snake on the property
  • Do not attempt to handle, trap, or photograph venomous wildlife at close range
